Overcome by an intense feeling of alienation and otherness and finding it nearly impossible to understand those who surround him who live in egoism and bad faith, Oba can't help but resort to buffoonery in order to establish interpersonal relationships. He is abused by a female servant during his childhood, but decides reporting it would be useless.
No Longer Human
The story is narrated by Sonoko Kakiuchi, a young woman from Osaka. At the start of the novel she lives comfortably with her husband Kotaro, and attends art classes at a local women's school. Rumors spread around the school that Sonoko is having a lesbian affair with another student, the beautiful young Mitsuko. Sonoko finds herself drawn to Mitsuko, though she barely knows her, and she proceeds to forge a friendship with her. Soon, she invites Mitsuko to her house to pose nude for her figure drawing. Mitsuko agrees, but insists on covering herself with a sheet. The sexual tension comes to a head when Sonoko rips the sheet away, thus sealing her infatuation. The two begin a fiery affair.
One day, after the completion of a luxurious sofa commissioned for the
lobby of a new hotel, he realized that it was his masterpiece. Reluctant
to part with it, he reshaped the inner structure of the sofa to allow one
human being to sit inside of it. Inside the sofa he packed enough food
and water for a few days. After instructing his assistant to organize the
pickup of the sofa, he climbs inside. The sofa is then transported to the
lobby of the hotel.
